How to choose a children's bike?

A children's bicycle is not just a smaller version of an adult bicycle. Children's bicycles are specially adapted to the child's height and physical abilities – maintaining balance, controlling brakes, and shifting gears.

Therefore, when choosing a children's bicycle, it is important to take your time and choose wisely – this way, your child will feel safe, comfortable, and will truly enjoy riding.

Bicycle wheel size – what does it mean and how to choose?

The size of children's bicycle wheels is measured in inches and ranges from 12" to 26". However, choosing a bicycle based solely on wheel size is not the best solution. The frame geometry differs for each manufacturer, so a bicycle with a 16-inch wheel may be suitable for a smaller child, while another manufacturer's bicycle may be suitable for a larger child.

Tip: First, consider the child's height and consult with bicycle shop specialists to test the bicycle and make sure it is comfortable.

Children will have fun riding on grass, trails, asphalt, or bike paths—whether it's a trip to school or to visit friends on their new favorite bike.

How to pick the right bike?

  1. Child's height – basic guideline. For example, the Wahoo Trail size chart,

Wheel size

Cyclist height

12"

86 - 102 cm

16"

99 - 117 cm

20"

114 - 132 cm

24"

130 - 150 cm

26"

146 - 160 cm

A few more things to keep in mind

  1. Child's abilities – Can the child already maintain balance? Can they reliably control the brakes? Can they already use the gear system? Based on this, choose either a balance bike or a full-fledged bike with pedals.

  2. Safety and convenience – Choose a bike with a high-quality braking system, a comfortable seat, and a lightweight frame so that your child can easily control it and enjoy riding.
