Electric bicycles are a new, fast-growing category of bicycles, which in some developed European countries has already gained a market share equivalent to that of traditional bicycles. In theory, the types of electric bicycles are similar to those of traditional velo-speed bicycles, but so far the most popular are electric mountain bicycles and electric bicycles for urban and everyday use.

Under EU legislation, an electric bicycle is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor with a power of up to 250W and a maximum speed up to which the electric motor will provide support limited to 25km/h - such bicycles are treated as conventional bicycles and may be used on pedestrian paths and in general traffic in accordance with the rules for the use of conventional bicycles.

Pros: faster travel, longer distances and significant extra weight.

Cons: significantly more weight than a traditional bicycle, more expensive than a traditional bicycle, not well suited for parking and storage in an apartment
